Population

According to the national census of 2001, the Portuguese population has 10.355.824 inhabitants, of which 4.999.964 are male and 5.355.860 female. The population density is represents 107.6 inhabitants per Km2, distributed irregularly. It is higher in the north than in the south and higher in the Coast than in the interior areas. Lisboa and Oporto have the highest demographic concentration. Lisbon metropolitan area has approximately 2.500.000 people and Oporto metropolitan area 1.150.000 inhabitants.

The emigration phenomenon, a constant of the Discovery period, led to the creation of several flourishing Portuguese Communities spread around the world and reaching today an estimated number of 4,5 million people.
