The literary prize «Rodrigues, the Interpreter» was created in 1990 with a fund donated by an old official of the Embassy, Mr. Jorge Midorikawa. The annual prize awards works edited in Japan and in Japanese on Portuguese themes, authors and translations. Its editions awarded many authors. Among the awards are translations by Portuguese writers and unpublished books on Portuguese themes.
João Rodrigues, a Jesuit missionary, who lived in Japan between 1577 and 1610, was the interpreter of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and became known as “Tçuzu” among historians and those who know his work. Besides interpreter, he was also one of the authors and coordinator of the “Vocabulário da Lingoa de Japan” (“Vocabulary of the Japanese Language”), published in 1603, the first Japanese-Portuguese dictionary, “Arte da Língua de Japam” (“Japanese Language Art”), in 1608, “Arte Breve da Língua de Japam” (“Brief Art of the Japanese Language”), in 1620 and “A História da Igreja de Japam” (“The History of the Japanese Church”), in 1634.
